All workplaces covered by the Work Environment Act must have first aid preparedness and work preventively to reduce risks in the work environment. This means that there must be a sufficient number of people in the workplace who can provide first aid. How many people are needed is assessed on the basis of the risks involved, the size of the workplace, shift work, the geographical spread of the workforce and the distance to medical care. The details of first aid in the workplace are regulated in the regulation AFS 1999:07 - First aid and crisis support.
